I wanted to make something that was massive and light at the same time
The programme is of a Gallery, with ample space for exhibitions and infrastructure
The entire building is designed to receive and spread natural light inside
It started with the idea of subtraction, I experimented with a few different shapes to use as "cutters" and performed a boolean operation on a bigger one.
I went through a lot of iterations before I found a shape that I liked and decided on a cube cut by multiple cylinders.
I love the curves that appear when the negative space of cylinders intersect, especially when they are oriented at around 90°.
I found a very important flaw in my design: the rain was falling into the building in areas that were designed to be dry
I discovered this through a quick rain simulation inside of blender.
The rain was running across the cylindrical survace and coming out on the other end in a different orientation, spraying the covered areas.
I wanted the ground level to be open but I had to design a retractable roof cover for rainy days.
I was inspired I'd guess by a trip I made to the Capital of my country, Brasilia, in which I visited many museums and buildings designed by Oscar Niemeyer and Lucio Costa. Many of those constructions consisted aesthetically of large volumes built on a level terrain with some nuances of lightness brought by the delicate use of openings and curves amongst heavy primitive shapes
